(2016), her first feature as a director (which racked up circa 700,000 admissions in local theatres), acclaimed German actress Karoline Herfurth is going back to directing and acting at the same time. Principal photography has started in and around Berlin on her new effort, Sweethearts [+see also:

, for Hellinger/Doll Filmproduktion

The story, scripted by Monika Fäßler, is centred on the characters of Franny (Herfurth), a woman who is disorientated in both her private and her professional life, and who is subject to panic attacks, and Mel (Hannah Herzsprung), a single mother who has to provide for herself and her daughter, and has decided to do so by attempting a diamond theft. This is how they meet, as Mel takes Franny hostage, unaware that her fragile nerves will turn the situation into utter chaos. The circumstances are further complicated by the intervention of an attractive policeman that Franny knocks on the head (Frederick Lau, from Victoria [+see also:

) and the efforts of special intervention unit chief Ingrid von Kaiten (Anneke Kim Sarnau). Meanwhile, Mel and Franny strike up an improbable friendship.

Shooting is scheduled to wrap on 4 July. Sweethearts, which is being supported by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (€800,000), the German Federal Film Board and the German Federal Film Fund, is being co-produced by Warner Bros Pictures Germany, which will release it on national screens on 14 February 2019.
