The ninth edition of the Séries Mania international festival (27 April-5 May), chaired by Rodolphe Belmer and directed by Laurence Herszberg (read the interview), came to an end on Saturday after over a week of well-attended, rather festive screenings and other activities at different venues in Lille, the Northern French city now home to the major event – which, according to French Minister of Culture Françoise Nyssen, who was amongst the festival's key guests, places the capital city of the Hauts-de-France region on the international map together with Cannes, Clermont-Ferrand for shorts and Annecy for animation, especially since the festival has an already very well established and important market attached to it: the European Project and Talent Forum, now in its sixth edition.

After careful consideration of the ten contenders (see the news), the international jury – consisting of Chris Brancato (jury chair, co-creator of Narcos, amongst other achievements), Maria Feldman (co-creator and producer of False Flag, Grand Prize at Séries Mania in 2015), German actress Maria Schrader, French actor Clovis Cornillac, and writer Pierre Lemaitre – singled out the Israeli series On the Spectrum with the Grand Prize. The Italian series Il miracolo, by acclaimed writer Niccolò Ammaniti (SkyWildside, Arte France, Kwaï; Italian broadcaster: Sky; French and German broadcaster: Arte), on the impact of the discovery of a miracle statue weeping tears of blood during a police raid on the property of a mafia boss, snagged two awards: Special Jury Prize and Best Actor for Tommaso Ragno. Russian thesp Anna Mikhalkova was named Best Actress for An Ordinary Woman.

In the French competition, Ad Vitam emerged as the winner, Anne Charrier got the Best Actress Award for her performance in Maman a tort, and Roschdy Zem (Aux animaux la guerre) shared the Best Actor gong with Bryan Marciano (Vingt-cinq).

The International Panorama, including 19 series weighed up by bloggers, saw the triumph of the British title Kiri. The public's favourite was the US production The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
