What do the members of the Spanish Academy of Film Arts and Sciences consider to be the best film of the past year? Is it the one that garners the highest number of its awards, the coveted Goyas, or the one that ends up with the accolade for Best Fiction Film? It’s quite the paradox after the (tedious, lacklustre and slow-paced) ceremony held on Saturday 3 February in Madrid, at which Giant [+see also:

received ten statuettes (mainly in the technical categories, such as cinematography, editing and art direction), while The Bookshop [+see also:

(a production between Spain, the UK and Germany) had to make do with just three, but they were the most conspicuous: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Film. Thus, Isabel Coixet (who is already the proud owner of four other Goyas from previous years) took the microphone time after time to express her gratitude to the academy members for their votes.

Over the course of the evening, many languages were heard: The Bookshop was shot in English, Giant in Basque, Summer 1993 [+see also:

(Best Sound) and other prizewinners in Spanish. It was also an occasion to demand gender equality, and indeed, many women came up on stage: Carla Simón (who collected the Goya Award for Best New Director), Marisa Paredes (the recipient of a well-deserved Honorary Goya) and Coixet herself were just some of the valiant and spirited females who were honoured at the ceremony.

Some of the standout moments during the gala for the 32nd edition of the Goyas included the emotional speech by Nathalie Poza, who won Best Actress for Can’t Say Goodbye [+see also:

(Best Latin American Film), and a real outpouring of charisma by the ever-talkative Julita Salmerón, the new “star” of Spanish cinema, thanks to Muchos hijos, un mono y un castillo [+see also:

) and Adelfa Calvo, who was magnificent in the role of a karaoke-crazy caretaker inclined to fall in love.

Lastly, it is worth noting that the Film Academy directors’ speech – read out by filmmaker Mariano Barroso and actress Nora Navas in the absence of president Yvonne Blake, who is recovering after suffering a sudden stroke a few weeks ago – once again asked the government for the eternally postponed lowering of VAT, reminded those present that Spanish film is a profitable industry and, as in the rest of the ceremony, demanded equal working conditions for men and women.
