, thanks to her decision to blindly trust in the directorial talent of Raúl Arévalo, who up until that point had only worked as an actor. Through her production outfit, La Canica Films, the Madrilenian has once again thrown her weight behind another newcomer’s leap to feature-length directing: over a period of six weeks in the last quarter of 2017, Jota Linares shot Animales sin collar (lit. “Animals With No Collar”), a film with a strong plot and a powerful mise-en-scène, in and around Seville.

The cast of the movie – a romantic thriller with hints of melodrama – comprises Natalia de Molina, Daniel Grao, Natalia Mateo, Ignacio Mateos and Borja Luna. Grao plays a politician who is about to take over the reins of an important position, while de Molina portrays his wife: one weekend, the couple gets together with some old friends at a country house, where ghosts from the past begin to resurface, with unforeseen consequences. Topics such as second chances, women’s empowerment, ambition, love, death, redemption and failure pepper the screenplay, which was penned by Linares himself (Cádiz, 1982).

“A mutual friend talked to me about Jota,” Bodegas told Cineuropa, “and assured me that he was very talented, so I agreed to meet him, and I really liked how he told me the story of his movie and how he envisaged it: I saw something special, I felt a connection with his sensibilities, I was blown away by the script, and I got stuck into producing it.”

Animales sin collar is being staged by La Canica Films and Animales sin collar AIE, in co-production with Palomar Spa (Italy). It enjoys the involvement of Netflix, Movistar + and Film Factory (which will take care of its international sales), as well as backing from the ICAA and SGR. Entertainment One Films Spain (eOne Films) will oversee its Spanish distribution.
