“2016 was the best year for Norwegian cinemas since 1983. That we can manage to be ahead of this result is incredible and once again shows how strong the cinemas’ position is compared with other cultural and entertainment offerings,” said Guttorm Petterson, managing director of Norwegian cinema association Film & Kino, when he published the admissions statistics for the first six months of this year.

In 2017, the theatres have so far sold 5,828,323 tickets – 0.8% more than in 2016. June’s result of 838,999 was 8.6% slower than last year, but was still over 800,000, which has happened only four times since 1999.

860,000 of the cinemagoers have chosen to watch local productions, as against 954,000 in 2016 – accordingly, only one Norwegian title qualified for the top-ten charts, Rasmus A Sivertsen’s In the Forest of Huckybucky [+see also:

, and it was premiered last year. The list is dominated by American fare, but it is worth bearing in mind that number three, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, was helmed by Norwegian directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning, of the award-winning Max Manus: Man of War [+see also:

 (2012).

“The autumn will be a real test – it is definitely high season for watching films in the theatres, and last year there were many strong premieres, especially of Norwegian features, which controlled 23.9% of the 2016 market,” Petterson concluded.

Here is the list of Norway’s top ten films for January-June 2017: Beauty and the Beast (347,611 admissions), Moana (296,285 admissions), Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (286,132 admissions), Fast and Furious 8 (284,788 admissions), The Boss Baby (270,586 admissions), Fifty Shades Darker (245,344 admissions), In the Forest of Huckybucky (206,150 admissions), La La Land (175,766 admissions), Logan: The Wolverine (172,963 admissions), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (160,579 admissions).
