Nataša Bučar has been appointed by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia as the new director of the Slovenian Film Centre (SFC), replacing Jožko Rutar. She was selected by the SFC board from among a total of eight candidates.

Previously, Bučar occupied the position of project manager at the biggest film festival in Slovenia, the Ljubljana International Film Festival, for a period of eight years; she also served as director of the 12th Festival of Slovenian Film, assistant director at the Slovenian Film Fund (the institution that preceded the SFC) and general director of the Media Directorate at the Slovenian Ministry of Culture. Currently, she is a marketing expert at Kinodvor City Cinema, a successful arthouse cinema in Ljubljana.

The new director will officially take up her new position on 1 December for a mandate of five years. “The first challenge is surely the implementation of the new financial scheme for foreign producers, who will henceforth be entitled to a 25% cash rebate in the Republic of Slovenia,” Bučar told Cineuropa (read more about the new financial scheme here). Some of her other priorities will be creating better conditions for film and audiovisual production in Slovenia, a gradual increase in funding for the agency and the promotion of the development of film culture, as she hopes that “quality films, be they national, European or from other countries, will have an increasing audience”.

Nerina Kocijančič, the current acting director of the agency, told Cineuropa that it was very important that Nataša Bučar had gained experience working as assistant director at the predecessor to the SFC, as this has made her familiar not only with the way in which decisions are made at the agency, but also with its limitations. “You can have a very good programme, which, when faced with cruel reality, cannot actually be implemented.” When asked what she expected from the new director over the next five years, Kocijančič stressed the need to continue developing partnerships at home and abroad – such as the collaborations with the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Fund, with which the SFC has set up the RE-ACT initiative, aimed at developing new audiovisual projects and fostering international co-productions.
