The European Documentary Network (EDN) has announced that a total of 24 international and Portuguese documentary projects have been selected for the upcoming Lisbon Docs – New Gateways to Your Audience event, scheduled to unspool from 14-18 October in the Portuguese capital.

As at previous editions, EDN director Paul Pauwels will be presenting the forum, where selected participants will have the opportunity to pitch their projects and receive feedback from a panel of experts. The workshop sessions will focus on analysing the content of the projects and delivering advice on how to tell stories that can reach large audiences without sacrificing artistic integrity.

Assessing the projects will be a prominent line-up of financiers, including commissioners and experts from HBO Europe, ARTE GEIE, The Guardian, Al Jazeera English, ERT SA, SVT, Sheffield Doc/Fest, PBS, Czech Television, VRT, EO/IKONdocs and CPH:DOX.

Lisbon Docs 2016 has received 30% more applications than last year. According to Pauwels, “The tutor team will work with participants from no fewer than 20 different countries, some coming from as far as South Africa, Mexico and India. We also welcome a strong decision-makers’ panel consisting of active supporters of the international documentary, representing 11 countries where documentary is still a very high priority.”

Isabel Machado (president of Lisbon-based APORDOC, which co-organises the event) expressed her excitement to be “able to foster the development of projects with international appeal on national ground, enabling these films to boost their current production and creative status with the expertise and experience of a great network”.
