Actor and director Eduardo Casanova

Eduardo Casanova is a real media star in Spain: his character Fidel, an openly homosexual teenager in the TV series Aída, made him into not only a gay icon, but also such a well-known face that he cannot walk down the street without being hounded by hordes of fans hungry for selfies. The tirelessly creative Madrilenian actor has so far shot short films such as Fumando espero, Amor de madre, La hora del baño and Eat My Shit (which was a real viral sensation, garnering praise from Paco León), in which the grotesque and the risqué rub shoulders to humorous effect. And they have really grabbed the attention of that monster of Spanish cinema we call Álex de la Iglesia.

by Zoe Berriatúa. And now,it seems he has felt no less tempted by Pieles (lit. “Skins”), which he is producing through Pokeepsie Films, a company he runs together with his partner, actress Carolina Bang, which was born of their desire to discover and foster bold new talents who are fans of horror, suspense and the fantastic genre.

The screenplay for Pieles brings together all of these characteristics, as according to Casanova – a self-confessed fan of Ulrich Seidl, David Cronenberg and David Lynch – it is a social drama that ties in with North American underground films. It tells the story of three broken toys who have been discriminated against by society because they don’t match up with stereotypes of “normality”: a little girl with no eyes, a woman with a deformed face and Samantha, whose digestive system is back to front.

It will be toplined by Ana Polvorosa, Jon Kortajarena and Macarena Gómez. The other producers of this film, which is currently in development, are The Other Side Films S.L., the outfit owned by the Prada brothers, and Nadie es perfecto P.C., run by Kiko Martínez (who was also behind Shrew’s Nest and Los héroes del mal).
