The Reunion by Taneli Mustonen

In 2015, Finnish films took a record number of 2.56 million admissions, to control 29% of the market, exceeding the previous top result (from 2012) of 2.36 million – the fourth time the two-million-admissions milestone has been exceeded in the 2000s. The theatres sold a total of 8.7 million tickets, up 19% on the previous year.

According to Irina Krohn, managing director of the Finnish Film Foundation, the digitisation of all Finnish cinemas lies at the origin of this increase. “Admissions were over seven million for the sixth year in a row, and for the first time the number of screens is also growing; last year, three new theatres were opened, so now there are 300 screens in 120 cities,” she said.

“It seems the Finns are still enjoying the cinema experience despite the growing number of new distribution channels. Here, public authorities, filmmakers and industry professionals jointly set goals and promote film culture, and that strategy has proved effective,” Krohn added. “I am pleased to see the confidence that Finnish audiences have in our films.”
