The retrospective begins with the 1931 film Labour on the Douro River

Manoel de Oliveira’s vast body of work will be the subject of a full retrospective at several venues in the late director’s hometown of Porto. Kicking off today and unfolding until 12 December, the event is named Grande Plano (lit. “Close-up”) and is the most complete retrospective ever dedicated to the most internationally celebrated Portuguese filmmaker.

“Those who had the privilege of being contemporaries of Manoel de Oliveira’s will now have the opportunity (and the responsibility) to know his work, which belongs to everyone and concerns (or will concern) everyone,” stated António Preto, professor, essayist and curator of the retrospective, who has dedicated part of his work in recent years to analysing and circulating de Oliveira’s films.

The screenings will then mostly follow their chronological order of production, making for a total of 38 films, including shorts and features. The screenings will be wrapped up by a debate scheduled for 10 December at the Rivoli Theatre.
