Ukbar to co-produce The Train of Salt and Sugar

Pandora da Cunha Telles’ Lisbon-based company Ukbar Filmes (Florbela [+see also:

film profile]) is currently co-producing Licínio de Azevedo’s new film, The Train of Salt and Sugar [+see also:

film profile], in Mozambique. Principal photography is expected to wrap in September, and theatrical distribution is scheduled for 2016.
Adapted from de Azevedo’s novel of the same name, the film is a love story between a nurse and a soldier set in the midst of the Civil War in Mozambique, on a train that connects Nampula to Malawi, which is seen as the only hope for hundreds of people willing to risk their lives to guarantee the survival of their families.
Ukbar Filmes is co-producing the project along with Ébano Multimédia (Mozambique), Les Films de l'Étranger (France), Panda Filmes (Brazil) and Urucu Media (South Africa). Besides being backed by Portugal’s film body, the ICA, The Train of Salt and Sugar was also the winner of the Locarno “Open Doors Grant” in 2014, which rewarded it with 20,000 Swiss francs and also with a €7,000 CNC prize.
De Azevedo is a Brazilian-born director who settled in Mozambique in 1975. His latest film, Virgem Margarida – also co-produced by Cunha Telles – premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012.
