Composer Patrick Doyle

For Patrick Duynslaegher, artistic director of Film Fest Gent, "Patrick Doyle was the ideal candidate to grant the Lifetime Achievement Award to. In 1989, his very first, thunderous original score, which accompanied Kenneth Branagh’s directorial feature debut, Henry V, already hinted at the fact that a great film-score composer had been born. Doyle has been Branagh’s regular composer ever since and has taken care of the musical side of things for film adaptations of plays by Shakespeare (Hamlet, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like it and Love’s Labour’s Lost). Thanks to his alternating tragic, noble, triumphant and romantic compositions, Doyle’s immense, versatile talent has enriched the movies of Robert Altman, Ang Lee, Chen Kaige, Alfonso Cuarón and Brian De Palma (including Carlito’s Way, a film for which he composed one of the best original scores of the 1990s). In blockbusters such as Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Doyle unveiled all his talent in front of his famous Hollywood colleagues by ensuring the musical backdrop for some spectacular action and adventure titles." Patrick Doyle also worked on the three latest films by Régis Wargnier, as well as Mike Newell’s Harry Potter and Bridget Jones’s Diary. Last year, composer Francis Lai took home this prestigious award.
