Just weeks after his new film project was disqualified by the Romanian National Film Center (see the news), Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa received the top award at the 21st Astra Film Festival (6-12 October, in Sibiu). The jury, chaired by famous Romanian director Cristi Puiu, chose the documentary Maidan [+see also:

, which depicts the Ukrainian people’s extraordinary struggle against the Viktor Yanukovych regime, as Best Film of this year’s edition.

The Best Documentary Award in the international competition went to Marc Bauder's Master of the Universe [+see also:

(Austria-Germany), a film about a German banker and his ideas about how the financial system rules the world. Corneliu Porumboiu's The Second Game [+see also:

(Romania) received a Special Mention.

Alina Rudnitskaya's Blood (Russia), a documentary about a mobile unit for blood collection and its journey through several Russian towns, received the Best Documentary Award in the Central and Eastern Europe competition. The Best Romanian Documentary Award went to Teodora Ana Mihai and her Waiting for August, the story of seven siblings who live by themselves while their mother is working in Italy. Meanwhile, Resolutions 2014, directed by Mihai Cristian Tranca, received the Best Cinematography Award for a Romanian Documentary. 

Sunday Lunch, directed by Dorottya Zurbo, snagged the Best Documentary Award in the Student sidebar, which showcases films directed by students from dozens of film schools around the world. The Best Cinematography Award in this section was won by Mohamed Tomescu, directed by Olesya Bortnyak and shot by Norbert Fodor.

The EcoCinematogrAFF Award went to Mark Grieco’s Marmato, while the Audience Award was bestowed upon Something Romantic, a documentary directed by Alexandru Buzatu and Ariana Toader.
