Before The Hobbit, Sonja and the Bull rules local box office

- After scoring the best local opening in 12 years, Sonja and the Bull finished its second week in distribution at the top of Croatian box office

Croatian romantic comedy Sonja and the Bull directed by Vlatka Vorkapic and produced by Interfilm opened on November 29 with 15 prints through distributor Duplicato and scored the best local opening in the last 12 years, with 9,949 admissions and gross box office of €40,046.

sold 15,583 tickets to earn €56,499, beating both Rise of the Guardians which went out on 26 prints for distributor Blitz with €46,423 from 13,124 admissions, and Discovery’s  Cloud Atlas [+see also:

on 15 prints with 5,207 tickets and €19,500. Both international releases were also in their second weeks.

It is very unusual for local films in Croatia to outsell Hollywood and international hits, which makes the success of Sonja and the Bull all the more impressive.

and The Mysterious Boy," said Hrvoje Hribar, director of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre. “2013 is going to be the year of Croatian film.”

Priest’s Children, to open on January 3, is another production of Interfilm, directed by Vinko Bresan, whose megahit Marshall was the previous best local opening in 2000.

Mysterious Boy is the sequel to this year’s children's hit Koko and the Ghosts [+see also:

which sold almost 80,000 admissions, making it the third highest local grosser of all time with €225,412. Both films, produced by Kinorama, are based on the series of children’s books by Ivan Kusan, whose son Daniel Kusan directed Koko and keeps creative control on the sequel which was directed and co-written (together with Hana Jusic) by Drazen Zarkovic and will open in March.
