- Michael Haneke's Love, Steve McQueen's Shame, and Thomas Vinterberg's The Hunt favourites for the European Film Academy's awards this year

The European Film Academy (EFA) recently chose the Sevilla European Film Festival, currently holding its ninth edition, to announce the nominees in all categories for the European Film Awards to be handed out on December 1 in Malta. EFA vice-president Nick Powell announced the finalists on the breathtaking terrace of the Abades in the Andalucian capital, in the company of a series of artists from the Spanish film sector and Susana de la Sierra, director of the ICAA.

Both Powell and De la Sierra stressed the role of culture in general and cinema in particuliar as an element of cohesion on the continent. Alluding to the special section dedicated to Greek cinema at the event, they highlighted the importance of culture from the south of Europe. Thus, Powell cited Plato ("Those who tell stories rule society") to stress the importance of European filmmakers in controlling the stories produced by the continent.

The favourites for this year's awards are however mostly by directors for the north of Europe, more precisely Austria (Michael Haneke's Love [+see also:
