- The Catalan director’s new film, an ensemble comedy about the identity crises of middle aged men, is to make its world debut at the festival directed by Marco Müller

Catalan director Cesc Gay’s new comedy, A Gun in Each Hand, is to be screened out of competition at the seventh edition of the Rome International Film Festival, according to the press conference held yesterday to present the event’s programme. If it’s unusual to see comedies at great film festivals, as they usually privilege dramas and experimental films, it’s even more so to see one close a film festival directed by Müller. It is equally as special that it be Gay’s new film.

“We are delighted to have been selected,” said the film’s producer Marta Esteban, who did not hide that this recognition was especially important in such a tough pass for the Spanish film sector. “It lends strength to the our film sector and grants these actors and Cesc presence in the whole of Europe.”

Shot over the course of nine months, from November 2011 to last June, in order to suit the various commitments of its great cast, the film is divided up into several stories that occur at the same time. In the words of Esteban, it’s an “ironic comedy about men and what they are currently going through, as it’s not quite clear what their place is in society.”

The film’s main characters, men aged around 45 going through identity crises, are played by some of Spain’s most talented actors like Luis Tosar, Eduard Fernández, Javier Cámara, Eduardo Noriega (photo), Jordi Moyá, and Alberto San Juan, as well as Argentinian actors Ricardo Darín and Leonardo Sbaraglia. Their co-stars are no less exceptional as they include Candela Peña (photo), Leonor Watling, Cayetana Guillén-Cuerv, and Clara Segura.

This Imposible Films production was co-produced by Televisió de Catalunya and TVE. German international sales agency The Match Factory is to handle its sales.
