European docs and animated films triumph at DOK Leipzig

The 53rd Leipzig International Documentary and Animated Film Festival, known as DOK Leipzig, picked its winners this week-end.

The Golden Dove for Best Documentary (worth €10,000) was awarded to Jerzy Sladkowski’s Swedish title Vodka Factory. The Silver Dove (worth €3,000) went to Joonas Berghäll and Mika Hotakainen’s Finnish/Swedish film Steam of Life, which reveals what Finnish men chat about at the sauna.

Meanwhile, Jacqueline Zünd’s Swiss/German film Goodnight Nobody and Samir Abdallah’s French co-production Gaza On Air received honourable mentions.

In the German documentary competition, the top winner was Gereon Wetzel and Jörg Adolph’s How to Make a Book with Steidl, followed by Chris Wright and Stefan Kolbe’s The Home, which got an honourable mention.

Among the animated film contenders, Oscar-winning French short Logorama, by François Alaux, Hervé de Crécy and Ludovic Houplain, nabbed the Golden Dove (€5,000). The Silver Dove went to another French title, Babioles by Matray, while Felix Gönnert’s Apollo was crowned Best German Animated Film.

In the animated competition, honourable mentions were presented to Norwegian director Anita Killi’s Angry Man and Vessela Dantcheva’s German/Bulgarian co-production Anna Blume.

The Workplace Film Award was handed to Czech director Tomás Kudrna’s All That Glitters, which also received the MDR Award for Best Eastern European Documentary.

Finally, the Ecumenical Jury Prize went to Marcin Sauter’s Polish film The North of Calabria, and the FIPRESCI Prize to Portuguese director Susana de Sousa Dias’s 48.
