TRAINING Europe

The future of media education in Europe

by

On December 15, Patrick Verniers (co-ordinator of the Euromeduc project), Thierry Desmet (appraiser) and Aviva Silver (head of the Media Unit at the European Commission), will outline the results of the Euromeduc project to the press. They will also present the book arising from discussions: "Media education in Europe: Controversies, challenges and perspectives".

Led by four partners (Media Animation, CLEMI, Zaffiria and the University of the Algarve), Euromeduc is an exchange initiative that brings together researchers, experts, educational heads, representatives from associations, European and non-European practitioners and specialists in media education. The aim is to encourage reflection on media education methods, from school to continuous training structures, and put the results to good use.

The European Commission is also publishing a call for proposals for a study aimed at assessing and improving the criteria for evaluating the levels of media education in all members states (SMART 2010/0006). The planned study will be a direct continuation of the previous study, but based on a more practical approach.

Its main objective is to analyse and test the criteria determined in the previous study in order to obtain accurate and concrete results on the media education levels of European citizens. The European Commission will present to the team in charge of the study the evaluation criteria for analysing and testing media education levels.
